The secret is revealed
Where do we go when we die? What is the meaning of life? Why do noses run while feet smell? Ever since the invention of the sock in the 8th century B.C. in ancient Greece, there has been another question that has puzzled humanity: Why do socks always go missing?
Everyone is familiar with this phenomenon: in the morning, when you’re stressed, you open the sock drawer, grab a pair of socks, and realize they don’t even match.
One is brand-new, the other already visibly worn down from life in a shoe. Thinned-out fabric in the toe area points to an increased risk of holes, and it’s only a matter of time before it’s a choice between keeping them or throwing them away. Reaching for another pair doesn’t seem to be the answer, because no two socks ever really match. Instead, there’s a pitiful pile of lonely orphaned socks in all sorts of colors, lengths, and stages of life.
Why Do Socks Disappear?
The hard work under adverse conditions—such as sweat, friction, or heat—makes it understandable that a desire to separate the foot from the sock arises. Other theories that challenge a child’s imagination include the sock monster, the black hole in the washing machine, or even the washing machine’s switch to a sock-based diet. Since the beginning of recorded history, billions of socks have gone missing. But always just one at a time, never in pairs. The only way we can explain this mystery is that someone is trying to make things as difficult as possible for us.
How many socks go missing?
British scientists have studied the disappearance of socks and made a surprising discovery: On average, we lose 15 socks per year. Rounded up over a lifetime, that’s 1,125 socks! In addition to answering the question of where socks go, the scientists have developed a formula (the “Sock Loss Index”) that calculates how many more socks you’ll have to say goodbye to in the future.
The Calculation
The “Sock Loss Index” can answer this question. According to this formula, factors such as your personal attitude toward doing laundry play just as much of a role as the amount of laundry to be washed. With the “Sock Loss Calculator,” you can easily calculate for yourself how many socks you’ll lose in the future. The formula is:
(L(p × f) + C(t × s)) - (P × A)
- “L” stands for the amount of laundry (number of household members × number of laundry loads per week).
- “C” describes the complexity of the laundry (different types of laundry [e.g., white, black] × number of socks washed per week).
- “P” refers to your positive attitude toward doing laundry (ranging from “I don’t like doing laundry at all” to “There’s nothing I’d rather do!”).
- “A” stands for the attention you pay to your laundry. This includes small checks like checking pants pockets or unrolling socks.

Where do socks go?
If you’ve thrown an even number of socks into the washing machine but fish out an odd number, the culprit can only be the washing machine itself. Perhaps it’s revenge for an overfilled drum? During the wash cycle, the socks drift into the depths of the washing machine drum. The heat and agitation cause the fabric to break down a little more each time, eventually disappearing down the drain hose.
But not all socks get lost in the washing machine. Some languish behind the radiator, get wedged between pieces of furniture, or have slipped under the bed. Others end up at the very bottom of the perpetually full laundry basket. Separated from their partners in the jumble of clothes, they don’t always end up in the same wash cycle. Still others fall helplessly from the clothesline and are left to their fate.
How can you prevent socks from going missing?
"Two are better than one"—that’s probably what the inventors of sock clips thought. However, this method isn’t foolproof, because the clips often disappear along with the socks. Plus, who has time to pair up all their socks? Of course, you can wash the socks in a separate load to maintain total control.
If, despite all precautions, you find another orphaned sock, you should pair it with a new partner as quickly as possible before it suffers from acute loneliness.
