Cashmere – the finest nature has to offer
Cashmere is one of the finest and most valuable natural fibers there is. It is made from the wool of the cashmere goat. To protect themselves against the cold temperatures in their natural habitat of the Himalayas, the goats have developed a particularly fine, soft and thick under-layer of wool that keeps them warm in the extreme cold.
The wool is often turned into cashmere sweaters, scarves or socks, which are particularly popular during the cold season. Cashmere wool caresses the skin with its soft, light fibers and offers a luxurious feel.
The origins of cashmere wool
The goats shed some of this soft wool in spring, when the air gets a little warmer. At this point, the valuable wool can be extracted from the under-layer by combing. Each goat provides only 100 to 150 grams of wool per year, which is why cashmere is one of the most valuable natural fibers there is.
The name of the wool is derived from the Indian region of Kashmir. In Roman times, the region was the top supplier of this valuable natural yarn. Now most cashmere wool comes from China, Mongolia, Iran, Australia, New Zealand and Scotland.
Fine and soft on the feet
BLACKSOCKS uses only tested cashmere wool to make its cashmere silk socks. Our cashmere silk socks are made of 56% pure cashmere and 25% finest silk.
This combination makes the socks extremely fine and comfortable to wear and guarantees an end to cold feet. They are reinforced with polyamide in the hard-working heel and toe areas.
The versatile properties of cashmere
Dampness, dirt, odors – cashmere gets rid of anything we don’t need and provides a pleasant warm environment for wearers. Cashmere goats have to protect themselves in temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees, so cashmere fibers are very long and hold six times as much heat as sheep’s wool. Dampness and odors, on the other hand, are removed.
Although cashmere fibers are very fine, they are still resistant to wrinkling and ripping. In fact, one way you can recognize a real cashmere product is that it will not hold any wrinkles. But don’t worry, we will check the wool’s authenticity for you.
Three times more luxury
With the cashmere sockscription, you are sent three pairs of cashmere silk socks in the post three times a year. Choose from four different colors of cashmere silk socks.
Cashmere is such a popular natural product that there are even forgeries around. Not all textiles sold as cashmere actually contain genuine cashmere wool. Since all animal wool has the same structure, it is sometimes difficult to detect forgeries that have incorporated less expensive varieties of wool into the fabric blend.
We perform DNA analyses to ensure that we can guarantee the authenticity of our cashmere wool. Only this allows us to be sure that what is labeled cashmere is actually cashmere. You can be sure that you are getting what you pay for.
Looking after wool
Cashmere’s natural self-cleaning effect means that it does not need to be washed after every time it is worn. Air a cashmere product and all odors will be removed, leaving it as good as new.
The product can be washed after being worn for the fourth or fifth time. Wash by hand or use a gentle wool wash program not exceeding 30 degrees. Rather than wringing the cashmere out, simply lay it on a terry towel, gently squeeze, and leave to dry flat. Any bobbles that form over time can be removed using a pilling comb.
