We care about your socks - and you should too. So we’ve put together five essential sock tips to give you the ultimate sock experience. If you have any to add, please email them to and we will share them with other sock enthusiasts.
Sharp objects are hazardous to your sock’s health. Avoid all pointed tips such as kitchen knives, fountain pens, letter openers, corkscrews and nails, especially on your toes. They can all cause irreparable damage, including pulls, rips and holes, curtailing your sock’s lifespan. (Side note: Gentlemen, if you wish to attract or keep a girlfriend, long toenails should be banished forever.)
When “bathing” your socks, no need to use temperatures over 104 degrees. Sure, they want to feel clean, but this is no reason to boil them alive. This temperature will maintain excellent foot hygiene.
Socks, underwear and t-shirts are garments you wear close to your body. Avoid any harsh cleaning agents such as bleach or stain remover. Some water and mild hand washing soap will do the job in most cases.
Avoid hot tumble drying (aka torture chamber for socks) to ensure a long life for your socks. The dryer’s hot air, combined with the spinning that pulls the fiber, causes an unbearable atmosphere for your socks. So if possible, keep your favorite socks away from the egregious spinning sauna.
If you’ll note, socks like to hang out in pairs. In books, pictures and in backyard clotheslines, socks are always with their peers. If left on their own they feel lonely and useless. So to keep your socks with their proper mates, we recommend that you always remove your socks together, and keep them together during the waiting, washing and storing process until their next use. That way, you can prevent a lone sock facing a premature end under a hotel bed, while the other one lies naked in the dark shadows at the back of a drawer.
